No difference in the incidence of age-related macular degeneration between statin users and nonusers

Age-related macular degeneration shares many of the same risk factors with atherosclerosis. There is a postulated role of lipid-lowering agents in preventing age-related macular degeneration. Through this meta-analysis, Eshtiaghi and co-workers demonstrate no significant difference in the incidence of early or late age-related macular degeneration between statin users and nonusers. Furthermore, in patients with existing AMD, statin use had no significant influence on the subsequent development of choroidal neovascularization or geographic atrophy.
