In the study conducted by Falavarjani et al. from the University of California with OCT-angiography in preterm babies, was shown that the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) was absent or significantly smaller. Foveal avascular zone measurements were performed with Optovue RTVue AVANTI (Optovue Inc, Fremont, CA). 28 eyes of 15 children with a history of prematurity and 15 eyes of 11 term children were compared. While FAZ was not observed in 42.8% of eyes with a history of prematurity, FAZ was observed in all eyes in the control group. In addition, it was determined that the FAZ area correlated with gestational age.
Premature babies have smaller foveal avascular zone.
